Artist Statement

My practice explores nature and human presence, considering how materials store memory and consequence of our actions. Using natural or reclaimed materials, I rework discarded belonging into pensive, deglamorized art to examine the intersection of humanity and nature, and their uneasy, messy relationship.

Karsyn Gilbert

This sculpture, carved from salvaged wood resembles an eagles talon. Inspired by the seldom but sacred encounters with eagles I’ve met on reserve. Yet, dumps and man-made sites attract dozens of eagles, threatening and tarnishing this sanctity. This work grapples with this tension, touching on themes of consequence, loss, and decay.
