Artist Statement

“Inside a Momma’s heart” has been gestating for several years. When our children suffer, as a mother, we love, support, pray, grieve, knock (sometimes pound) on doors and cry for help. With all that other focused energy spiraling around, occasionally landing and achieving the desire results, as grieving goes, there comes a time when we pause, if just from exhaustion. We are left with ourselves and our own pain. It is from this space that “Inside a Momma’s heart” was birthed. This is one woman’s visual experience of learning how to carry her child’s sorrows in her heart with grace.

The paintings of Marzana Bates, visual artist, echo her knowledge and exploration of the human body as a physiotherapist. Attention to detail, nuances, lines of tension and interconnections inform her work. She brings to life minutia, things largely unseen or unnoticed to a large than life scale, simultaneously pondering emotional undertones.
